• Pass a resolution to commit the jurisdiction to developing the plan. <br /> • Work with the chief elected official to establish the overarching vision and purpose of the plan <br /> to frame the planning effort <br /> 3. Organize an interdepartmental team of local government staff to develop the plan. <br /> • Use the Team Formation Checklist (in your toolkit folder) as a guideline for forming the team. <br /> • Recruit/appoint interdepartmental team members and communicate the time commitment and <br /> expectations to the team members. <br /> • Define the expectations of interdepartmental team and recruit/appoint members. <br /> • Identify the departments to include in the interdepartmental team. Typical departments to <br /> include in the planning process are Public Works, Transportation, Planning, Environment. <br /> Economic Development, Parks, Housing. Buildings, Health, Education. and Sanitation. <br /> • Kick-off interdepartmental team meetings with an initial meeting to communicate their roles and <br /> responsibilities and to get their input on the major sustainability challenges in the jurisdiction. <br /> • Schedule regular interdepartmental team meetings to keep the planning process moving <br /> forward and to make sure the team is committed and engaged. <br /> TIPS TO CREATE AN EFFECTIVE TEAM <br /> Be inclusive. make sure the key departments <br /> are involved in the planning process, but invite <br /> all departments to participate, and encourage <br /> them to think about what sustainability means <br /> to their operations. <br /> Communicate the importance of the interdep- <br /> artmental team: have the mayor or chief elected <br /> official speak to the team at a kick-off meeting <br /> or send a memo explaining their role and asking <br /> them to make the sustainability plan a priority. <br /> Ensure that departmental directors assign staff - <br /> to participate in the interdepartmental team and that <br /> the staff have sufficient time available in their work <br /> plans to work on the plan. <br /> Incorporate interdepartmental team participation .011.41416 <br /> into job descriptions and roles and responsibilities. <br /> 4. Form a sustainability advisory board. <br /> • Recruit and appoint sustainability advisory board members representing a diversity of con- <br /> stituency groups, including environmental and community advocates and labor and business <br /> leaders who will help shape the scope and recommendations in the plan. Do not be shy about <br /> appointing those who may have disagreed with the administration in the past. The advisory <br /> board should include the top representatives from various constituency groups, regardless of <br /> 23 their political positions. <br />
