4 <br />How to Use this Guidebook <br />This guidebook is organized in two sections: <br />A. GET INSPIRED. Learn about the benefits of ADUs and see <br />the ADU experiences of real Twin Cities families. <br />B. HOW TO BUILD AN ADU. Learn the basics of ADU development, <br />from start to finish. <br />This guidebook is a resource to help you get started, but it cannot replace the <br />knowledge and experience of local designers, builders and planners. The size and <br />shape of your property, the rules of the city you live in, your budget and your own <br />design needs and preferences will make your ADU-building experience unique. <br />What is an Accessory Dwelling Unit? <br />An ADU is a self-contained residential unit with its own living room, kitchen <br />and bathroom. <br />ADUs are known by many names: carriage or coach houses, accessory apartments, <br />garden apartments, mother-in-law suites, granny flats, backyard cottages and <br />secondary dwelling units.
