Typically, a short application and fee are
required. These applications are managed by different departments depending on the city.
Call the city’s general line and asked to be directed to the right department, or ask city
staff members for more information during the permitting process.
Becoming a Landlord
If you decide to rent out your ADU, you should brush up on important landlord-tenant and
fair housing laws to know your legal obligations and how to resolve any issues that might
arise. Having this information can help you and your tenant maintain a positive relationship.
A few resources are highlighted on the next page.
If becoming a landlord isn’t for you, look into hiring a property management company
to take care of the details.
MOVE-INSTEP SEVEN
NOTE
This section presumes
that the ADU is being
rented out, but everything
discussed also applies
if you want to move into
your ADU and rent out
your main home.
Move in!
Construction is complete!
