Mounds View Silver View Park Pond
3.5 Stormwater Pond Buffer Existing Cover Type
Unmowed herbaceous vegetation cover surrounds Pond EW-4.P3, northwest of Pond EW-4. Cover is
primarily dominated by nonnative grasses such as brome and reed canary grass. Native plants that were
observed commonly near the water's edge included wild mint, northern water plantain, and beggar's ticks.
Other native plants included sensitive fern, giant goldenrod, panicled aster, broadleaf arrowhead,
jewelweeds, blue vervain, violets, and a few occurrences of rice cutgrass and American manna grass.
Canada thistle was common and purple loosestrife occurred occasionally around the pond as well.
Vegetation Management Goal
• Native plant cover with improved water infiltration capacity, wildlife habitat, and native plant
diversity.
Vegetation Management Objective
• Continuous ground cover by diverse native herbaceous species, represented by deep-rooted
grasses, sedges, and forbs.
Stormwater Pond Buffer Cover T •e - Desired Future Conditions Overview
NATIVE GROUND COVER
Vegetation
Layer Cover(%) Representative Plant Species
Herbaceous Mesic prairie and woodland edge species on mid-to upper slopes; wet
Ground 100 meadow species on lower slopes and within the draina•e
3.6 Wetland Existing Cover Type
About 5.5 acres of shrub-swamp and forested wetlands occur in the project area. Along the east side of
the south arm of Pond EW-4, the forested wetland had canopy cover by cottonwoods and boxelder with
buckthorn below. Much of the remaining wetland cover was degraded Willow-Dogwood Shrub Swamp.
Shrub/sapling cover was generally less than 50% and dominated by invasive shrubs, common and glossy
buckthorn, and invasive, nonnative cattails, purple loosestrife, and reed canary grass. Native sandbar
willow, red-osier dogwood, and Bebb's willow occurred occasionally. The wetland had scattered canopy
cover by cottonwood, elm, boxelder, and quaking aspen, providing less than 25% canopy cover overall.
Native plants in the herbaceous layer included swamp smartweed, giant goldenrod, panicled aster, starry
false Solomon's seal, fowl manna grass, clearweed, sensitive fern, small-spike false nettle, bristly sedge,
and monkeyflower. Herbaceous cover was sparse under thickets of buckthorn.
5 Project Number: 193806465 17
