® Stantec
To: Don Peterson From: Dendy Lofton, PhD, CLM
City of Mounds View Dan Edgerton, P.E.
Ben Otto
Minneapolis
Project/File: 193806465 Date: January 26, 2024
Reference: Water Quality Assessment of Silver View Pond, Mounds View, MN
Introduction
Memo
The June 2023 Mounds View Stormwater Pond Assessment report recommended a number of
implementation activities for the City of Mounds View to maintain and restore its stormwater ponding
system. One of the objectives in the implementation plan was the water quality improvement of Silver View
Pond in 2024. Stantec conducted several field data collection activities in 2023 to support the water quality
assessment. The purpose of this technical memorandum is to provide a summary of the field data
collection, desktop analysis methods and results, and management recommendations to improve water
quality in Silver View Pond.
Water Quality Assessment
In order to diagnose the existing water quality conditions in Silver View Pond, Stantec collected water
samples for nutrient analysis, surveyed the aquatic vegetation community, and collected sediment cores to
assess the rate of sediment phosphorus release. The phosphorus data was used to develop a lake
response model for Silver View Pond that estimates the proportion of phosphorus entering the pond
through runoff from the drainage area (external loading) and the proportion of phosphorus derived from
sediment release (internal loading).
FIELD DATA COLLECTION
Water Samples
Pond water samples were collected on 6/26/2023 and 9/6/2023 for analytical laboratory measurements of
total phosphorus (TP), orthophosphate, total nitrogen, and chlorophyll -a, which is a proxy for algal biomass.
Samples were collected from just below the water surface and delivered to RMB Laboratories for analysis.
At the time of sample collection on September 6, 2023, vertical profiles (every 0.5 m) of dissolved oxygen
(DO), temperature, pH, and oxidation-reduction potential (ORP) were measured with a hand-held
multiparameter probe (YSI).
Design with community in mind
