EAGLE SCOUT PROJECTS Director Saarion stated that three Eagle Scouts had
approached the department for projects in the last
couple of weeks. Those projects are:
e ) 1. Twin sandlot volleyball courts at Silver View.
2. Single sandlot volleyball court at Oakwood.
3. Restructure the volleyball court at Woodcrest.
Chairperson Burmeister requested that the projects be
documented for future reference.
CARPET REPLACEMENT
AT PARK BUILDINGS Director Saarion received approval from the City
Council to request bids for re -carpeting all four parks.
After visiting several neighboring communities park
buildings to see floor coverings used, it was
determined that carpeting would best serve our park
buildings. A brown, industrial carpeting was chosen.
TEEN PROGRAMMING Director Saarion stated that teen programming was
very difficult. According to a recent survey, teens
listed activities such as talking on the telephone,
gathering with friends, watching television, playing
video games, etc. as primary activities. These
activities are difficult to program. Some communities
are going with "risk programming" for teens, such as
rock diving at Taylors Falls for example. The Mounds
! View Parks and Recreation Department has not offered
program activities that are a risk due to liability
reasons. It was also mentioned that programming
afterschool teen activities is difficult because of
difficulties in securing facilities.
Director Saarion reviewed a program that was
proposed for a Junior Wrestling Program. Staff will
request the availability of the wrestling room with
Irondale Athletic Coordinator Jim Colletti in hopes of
coordinating the program beginning in September.
AFTERSCHOOL PROGRAMS Director Saarion stated that afterschool programs are
doing well at Sunnyside and not well at Pinewood for
reasons unknown. Mrs. Lin has requested an
extended latchkey type program several times, which
was offered by the department, but so far, this
program has yet to receive more than one registrant.
ADOPT A PARK Director Saarion stated that the "Adopt -a -Park" article
was placed in the City Newsletter, and that a call had
been received regarding the program. Staff will be
coordinating with volunteers to pick up trash,
schedule parks and supply trash bags.
3
