It is celebrated annually on June 19 to commemorate the ending of <br />slavery. Juneteenth traces back to 1865 in Galveston, Texas when Major <br />Granger announced that "All Slaves Are Free" 2.5 years after President <br />Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation. <br />At 1:30pm the Mayor will present a proclamation recognizing Juneteenth as <br />an important day of celebration and reflection.
