Dear Mounds View Park and Recreation Commission:
I am writing to express my support for tobacco -free recreation
environments for the Mounds View & Irondale Community. As a teacher
and coach at Irondale High School, I can see the importance in a healthy
and safe- place for the children to be able to be at. By supporting a
tobacco -free policy, the Park and Recreation Commission can send a clear
message that you care about the health of young people and want them to
make positive lifestyle decisions. As a high school and youth coach, I
have seen the frustration when using a park only to have people smoking
around the team.
Tobacco use not only exposes participants and spectators to the harmful
effects of second-hand smoke, but it is also a nuisance and safety
concern. The litter caused by tobacco use diminishes the beauty of the
city's recreational facilities and can be accidentally ingested by young
children. Tobacco use in these settings also sends negative messages to
our youth that tobacco use is an acceptable behavior within our
community.
I hope that the Mounds View Park and Recreation Commission can take
the lead and ban tobacco use at all city -owned parks and recreation
facilities.
Thank you for your consideration of the adoption of such a tobacco -free
policy.
Sincerely,
A7
Tom Rodefeld
Irondale Teacher and Coach
