MI•:Mo 'ro: Mayor and City COanci 1.
1'RUPI; DIrCCIoI' of Public Works/Community Uuvelopmcnt l
DATE': Nuvamber 29, 1983
SUBJECT: SIDEWALK SNOW REMOVAL
The City received an inquiry from the resident at 7501 Silver
Lake Road (model home for Mary Anderson project). This homeowner
was inquiring as to the City's policy on sidewalk snow removal,
especially for the sidewalk along Silver Lake Road south to
County Road I1-2.
It has been the past practice of the City to only plow
sidewalks for those through block crosswalks that are located on
public casements and/or right-of-ways. The inquiry noted above
resulted in staff reviewing the current policy on sidewalk snow
removal and determined that there is currently no formal policy
and that we have a section of sidewalk along Silver Lake Road and
County Road II-2 that probably will not be plowed or maintained
for a number of reasons. This section of sidewalk with the advent
of new homes in the Silver Lake Woods area will need to be main-
tained during the winter months to insure pedestrian safety in
the vicinity of Silver Lake Road and County Road 11-2.
Staff will begin developing a formal policy for Council review
covering the following issues:
•., blocv, lnnations such as walkway near
1. JllidwdlNO . miu
the Edgewood Community Center.
2. Walkways along major aterial roadways such as Silver
Lake Road that are on the rear side of double frontage
lots.
3. Sidewalks along public roadways.
4. Sidewalks accessing to public facilities such as
schools and parks.
Because of the heavy snowfall received last week, staff has taken
the initial steps to insure that the sidwalk along Silver Lake
Road, north of County Road H-2, is cleared for pedestrian use.
'Phis section of sidewalk together with the other sidewalks that
have been maintained by City personnel will continue to do so until
such time as a formal policy can be discussed and acted upon by
the City Council.
if you have any initial concerns, please share them with staff.
JCJ/bc
