The first time
one of my employees brought up the subject I told him that:
1) we don't have the money; 2) we have enough metal
locators; and 3) he should "darn" well learn to share the
metal locators with all departments. I watched the
situation all summer and I have changed my mind.
Therefore, Staff requests approval to purchase the subject
metal detector for $575.00 from Water Products Company.
At the present time, the City owns two metal detectors. In
the summertime, there are three areas that use the metal
detectors. They are the Parks, Water, and Inspections
Departments. If you include inspecting the M.S.A. street
.—, and City street projects, there are four areas of the City
that use and need metal detectors in the summer. During
this past summer there were numerous days where all the
departments used metal detectors. If one metal detector
breaks down and needs repair, the one remaining metal
detector is not sufficient to meet our daily needs. We also
lose valuable time shuffling the metal detectors from person
to person. If the City purchases an additional. metal
detector there will be one for each of the departments
(Parks, Water, and Inspections).
Staff proposes to buy the metal detector using the water
operating account (700-121-4703). The account has $450.00
budgeted for a hand lawn mower. The Water Department Staff
has determined that the metal detector is much more
important than the hand lawn mower. The rest of the money
is proposed to come from the sale of approximately 200 Corad
surplus water meters that the City sold for $1.50 per
meter. Total amount of the sale was approximately $300.00.
The City authorized this sale of surplus equipment on
October 21, 1984,
Please note that we are also saving over $3,000.00 by
purchasing only 36 new water meters this year.
My second quote was from Davies Water Equipment Company.
They verbally quoted $675.86 for the same metal detector.
