TO: Mayor, City Council and Clerk -Administrator
FROM: Police Chief
DATE: December 100 1984
RE: RADAR UNITS
The Police Department has two radar units. These units were purchased
in 1977. The radar units have improved our efficiency for monitoring
traffic because they could be operated while the Police car was
stationary or moving.
In the past two years, there has been a significant increase in cost
for maintaining these units. Also of concern, is the repair turn
around time which is about six weeks. Obviously not having a radar
unit in a squad car for that period of time has a significant impact
in the apprehension of traffic offenders.
I have talked to a representative of the manufacturerof the radar
units (MPH INDUSTRIES). He stated that the life expectancy of the
units we have, under normal conditions, is about five years.
I received quotes from two manufacturers of radar devices(see enclosed).
Kustom Quality Electronic quoted a KR-10 radar in the amount of $1,750.00.
MPH Industries quoted a S-80MC radar in the amount of $1,585.00 or
$2,700.00 for two units.
The Police Officers of this Department are familiar with both types of
radar units. They prefer the operational features of the S-80.
The 1985 capitol budget provides for $1,750.00 for the purchase of one
radar unit. I had planned on replacing one radar unit in 1985 and one
in 1986. Considering the repair costs and the life expectancy of current
units, I believe the replacement of the two units should be more immediate.
RECOMMENDATION:
City Council to authorize staff to purchase two radar units from MPH
Industrir.•s in the amount of $2,700.00. One unit would be delivered
in December 1984 and purchased with 1984 budget surpluses. One unit
to be delivered in 1985 and purchased as per the 1985 capitol equipment
program.
