BACKGROUND <br />The 1985 budget includes inspection and repair of the subject <br />well, pump and motor.. <br />Well #4 has not been used since 1979 because of high sand <br />content and odor problems. The odors are probably caused by <br />dying iron and/or sulfer bacteria. This bacteria releases a <br />gas when killed by the injection of chlorine at the well <br />house. The gas remains in the water until released at a <br />water tower or house water faucet. <br />Electrical, control, chlorine and fluoride equipment have <br />been salvaged for use at other wells. Replacement equipment <br />must be installed for the well to operate. <br />In 1979, the water had an iron content of 0.49 milligrams per <br />liter (mg/L) and a manganese content of 0.03 mg/L. The <br />Minnesota Department of Health's recommended limits are 0.3 <br />mg/L and 0.05 mg/L, respectively. (Attachment #1 is the 1979 <br />water quality report.) <br />The well should be bailed to reduce the sand content of the <br />well water. The hailing procedure removes excess sand from <br />the bottom of the well. <br />In the past, The City has not restricted summer lawn <br />sprinkling because water supply has always exceeded water <br />demand. During the dry summer of 1976, the City almost had <br />to restrict lawn sprinkling. Since then, summer water demand <br />has been low due to sufficient rainfall. If a future summer <br />is very dry, the City may need to pump all the wells in order <br />to meet the water demand. <br />Therefore, solving the problems at Well #4 will reduce the <br />probability of water shortages. <br />II. ALTERNATIVES <br />The following alternatives are possible solutions to water <br />supply problems in Mounds view: <br />1. Do nothing and hope the water supply is adequate in <br />future summers. <br />2. Correct the problems at Well #4 and if the problems <br />cannot be corrected, construct a water treatment plant at <br />Well #4. <br />
