\ MEMO TO: MAYOR AND CI
FROM: CLERK-ADMINI
DATE: MAY 13, 1985
SUBJECT: NEW BRIGHTON POST OFFICE
Mayor Linke recently became aware of the fact that changes
might be forthcoming with respect to the location of the New
Brighton Post Office and/or delivery of mail from that
facility.
At Mayor Linke's request I contacted Mr. Merritt Heaney,
Manager of the New Brighton Branch regarding this
information and was advised that he recently submitted a
report to the Post Office which included a suggestion that
the Branch Facility be relocated to a more central location
in their delivery area due to the lack of parking facilities
at their existing site and the rapid population growth they
are experiencing in the delivery area.
Mr. Heaney further suggested that if the City of Mounds View
was interested in this issue that we contact the Postmasters
of both St. Paul and Minneapolis as the City of Mounds View
is split in two different postal zones and they might be
interested in seeing a combination of those zones so that
they are not each responsible for one of the two zones.
Also, any efforts on the part of the City to obtain changes
in our postal situation should be coordinated with efforts
by our Federal T,agislators who would have to assist in
obtaining funding for the construction of new facilities if
such facilities were required.
staff would request Council direction as to how you wish to
approach this issue and would suggest that the time is right
for any effort in this area due to the fact that the Post
Office is aware of the current inadequacy.
DFP/mjs
