Public Service <br />The public relies on the Police Department for assistance <br />and advice in many routine and emergency situations which <br />develop in the community. Many of these calls are not <br />police related, but we respond to these requests and <br />aj�:.+ or aC indicated by the situation. <br />g. Animal Control/Nuisance Abatement <br />e ommunity Service officer an officers of the <br />Department enforce the animal control and nuisance <br />ordinances. The department impounds doys and other <br />animals and interacts with residents to ensure a cleaner <br />and safer community. <br />h. Schcol LiasO -youth Coun�seliU <br />The Department's Juvenile officer and other Officers of <br />the Department work closely with school officials, <br />Probation Officers, Human Services, and other agencies to <br />aid in the healtL, safety, and welfare of the community's <br />youth. <br />Civil Defense <br />The Department coordinates and plans with other agencies <br />proredares used in the event of a major disaster or <br />hazardous materials incident. Rendering aid to the <br />injured, providing security, and coordinating support <br />groups is a responsibility and a duty that the Department <br />must be prapared for. <br />The Police Department provides Police services to the community <br />year around, twenty-four hours per day. At the present time, the <br />Departnent employs a Chief, Sergeant/Investigator, one Corporal, <br />one Investigator, ei,ht Patroimen, The Department ai,o employs a <br />Community Service officer, one tull time secretary ar.d a part <br />time secretary. SvNport services are provided by the Ramsey <br />County Sheriff Department and the Bureau of Criminal Ppprenensiun <br />and ether agencies. <br />Increases in total Department vacation days accrued ind officers <br />having to testify in court more frequently has strained manpower <br />availab/lities in recent years. Total vacation time has <br />increased because many of our officers have more than ten years <br />with the City and most have been employed with the City for more <br />than five years, city code and Union contracts increase vacation <br />time at the five and ten year mark. Recent legislation has <br />increased penalties on some misdemeanor crimes, <br />henceofficmore people <br />have requested court hearings and jury trials. <br />to <br />testify at these trials and they receive compensation in the form <br />of overtime or time off. <br />
