MEMO 10: Bruce Anderson
FROM: Jeff Stottlemyer
DATE: February 27, 1980
RE: Skating Rink Season End Report
All warming houses have been checked and thoroughly looked at to see what
has disappeared or broken during the course of the skating season.
one of the problems we had this year was keeping shovels and brooms inside
the warming houses, not carefully watching who was using them caused a number
of shovels to be stolen. Brooms were being used primarily by kids making snow
caves or what have you. There was three weeks left in the program when we
bought six new shovels and two brooms. We also had problems with vandalism
occuring at a couple of parks so we bought new locks to replace the old ones.
Because of the vandalism we had two Mounds View Parks, Recreation 6 Forestry
jackets stolen, the sites where they were stolen from were Lambert and Hillview.
WHAT WENT WELL
One thing that the attendants did well was to be friendly and courteous with
all skaters. Whenever T was around which was quite often, the attendants
were helping kids put on their skates for them, talking with parents and
even played some games with the skaters.
The attendants were very firm with the skaters. They did not allow the skaters
to get the best of them.
It took some encouragement but once it was through to the attendants, they were
keeping the buildings clean.
They were good in letting the supervisor know of any problems occuring, for
example a hockey board isn't ingood condition, accurate accident reports and
anything damaging to the warming house.
The attendants madethe Kid-Naper Activity Day at the rink a big success, regard-
less of the poor weather we had.
PROBLEMS DURING THE SEASON
The problems that occurred were the caase ❑f the supervisor not stressing what
should be done about them at the weekly braff meetings. The supervisor did not
use the weekly staff meeting the way 2t was supposed to be used.
Attendants did not clear the skating areas during the light snow fall.
Attendants did not keep track of their shovels, scrapers and brooms.
Problem for the first part of the season was the use of our alternates,
scheduling being mixed up. The supervisor not knowing who worked, when and
where. Supervisor caught that problem and soon corrected it.
WHAT CHANCES COULD BE MADE
Being that this is the first year the supervisor ever ran an ice skating rink
program, he really couldn't see any changes needed. Maybe if he were to be the
supervisor for a couple of seasons, he could see some changes to make.
