MEMO TO: Parks and Recreation is
io r
FROM: Bruce K. Anderson, Di r
DATE: March 26, 1980 /
RE: Monthly Update, March, 1980
The purpose of this report is to keep the Parks and Recreation
Commission informed on current issues within the Parks,
Recreation and Forestry Department that don't need official
Commission action.
Mounds View A reciation Dinner - The Mounds View Appreciation
D nner is slated for Saturday, March 29, 1980, beginning with
cocktails at 5:30 PM at the Bel Rae Ballroom. The cost for
tickets is $8.00/person and they can be purchased up until
Friday, March 28, 1980, at Mounds View City Hall.
Student Intern - Jeff Stottlemyer has successfully completed his
internship with the City of Mounds View with plans to graduate
in May of this year. Staff is now working out the final details
for bringing in a new intern for this coming summer from the
University of Wisconsin - LaCrosse. Colleen Wilson will be
graduating this summer with a B.A. degree in Parks and Recreation
Administration. Colleen's emphasis is in municipal recreation
and she is interested in developing additional programming skills.
Her main responsibility will be with Mary and coordinating the
summer recreation programs.
Festival in the Park - The irate tox the 1980 F'estava•1. alp uie
Park has been c anged to Sunday, July 20, 1980, as the Ramsey
County showmobile was not available on July 13. Mary has been
working very closely with the Festivities Commission and I
have enclosed a list of programs we have proposed to run.
Frisbee Golf - We purchased ($225.00) a new frisbee golf hole
that will be used at each of our summer playground sites, as
well as at the Festival in the Park. Staff will be giving a
brief demonstration on Thursday.
After School Pro ram a Success - The after school program that
we presented in conceptual form last month is now successfully
drawing to a close. All eight sessions were run as scheduled
with over 175 children currently enrolled.
Wood Pile Survey - City Forester Jack Shields has been out actively
checking woodpiles since March 1, 1980. Jack is mainly concerned
with diseased elm and oak as it must be de -barked from March 1 -
July 1 of each year. Staff is convinced that our rigorous
enforcement program has been the major factor in the reduction of
our elm and oak trees in the City.
BKA/ea
