MEMORANDUM
Memo To :Mayor and City Council Members
From :Ric Minetor, Director of Public Works/City Engineer

Date :November 2, 1988
Subject :Water Treatment Plant Study - Update
During the last few months we have taken water samples and filter
media samples in an attempt to determine the problems with the
filter plant and an overall course of action for improving filter
effectiveness. SEH is scheduled to present their r.rort at the
November 21st agenda session.
We have already made some charges to our operations and are
rev(ewing other operations. We super -chlorinated the filters to
clean the media. We have also adjusted the backwash operation to
improve the removal of insoluble material filtered out of the
water. We are also reviewing the permanganate equipment to
insure proper dosage rates for this chemical. The filter beds now
appear more uniform and the backwash water appears dirtier than
previously ( this would mear. improvement in iron and manganese
_ removal). Va will be sampling finished water again to confirm the
effectiveness of the filters.
The long term outlook for this plant must also address the
capacity restriction of our filtering system. Although we rarely
operate wells 1,2, and 3 together; when we do we have to bypass
filtering of une of thet wells. The plant capacity is only 2000
gallons per minute: The wells each put out 1000 gallons per
minute. Additionally, we will need to consider the operation of
well 4. Currently we have no i.ron or manganese removal from water
produced by well 4. I have aeked SEH to include information
regarding this long term outlook in their report.
1
