S-" 1 a -
MEMO TO: Mayor and City Council
It FROM: Public Works Foreman Ulrich/.
DATE: September 29, 1988
SUBJECT: PUBLIC WORKS DUMP TRUCK AND SNOW EQUIPMENT BIDS
Bids were received and opej:-- Lvr the budgeted $60,000.00
Purchase of a dump truck with snow equipment on September 28,
1988. I have reviewed and evaluated the bids and they are as
follows:
1. TRUCK
Lakeland Ford $ 40,493.59
Northstar International 38,472.00
Bover Ford 40,951.59
2. EQUIPMENT (BOX AND SNOW EQUIPMENT)
MacQueen Equipment $ 21,266.00
J-Craft 18,859.00
Crysteel Truck & Equipment 18,352.00
Carlson Equipment 11,254.00
(snow equipment only)
Midland Equipment 18,055.00
(snow equipment only) 10,156.00
This bid and recommendation is not nearly as complicated as the
bid for the loader. The high and low bids on the dump truck/
chassis are approximately $2,000 apart; justifying the added
iexense sprelativelyyeasynfor 9me. Th[oughoutthe purchase fz)urFlastord Yyeerrom Lofeopa Ford a
,lions with the Ford we purchased in January of 1988. we have had
vertually no equipment failure or complaints related to this
vehicle.
The specifications for the 1988 truck were written to fit the
work the truck was expected to perform. I am very pleased with
the job that my staff did in preparing for the purchase of that
truck, taking into account that they had no previous experience
in snow plowing or heavy hauling of material.• For this reason,
we have essentially copied the prior specification and have
received the aforementioned bids. By awarding the purchase to a
Ford dealer, we would eliminate the duplication of spare parts,
filters and additional training.
My staff has familiarized themselves throughout the summer months
on the operation of this truck. I feel that due to the high
level of awareness that is needed for a plowing operation and the
frequency at which different operators could be in different dump
trucks, if we were cunsistant with one brand of truck that
essentially handled the same as they have previously experienced,
