'M-. Ia--
MEMORANDUM
Memo To :Mayor and City Council Members
From :Ric Minetor, ilirector of Public Works/City Engineer
Date :November 2, 1988
Subject :School Speed Zones - Update
I have received information from the Minnesota Department of Al
Transportation regarding establishment of school speed zones. To
establish a school speed zone, a traffic and enainperina
investigation is required. This investigation consists of
preparing a school route plan and conducting a school zone hazard
evaluation.
The school route plan should be prepared jointly by school and IL
traffic officials. The main objective of the plan is to minimize
the number of street crossings and maximize the safety of the
street crossings designaced on the plan.
The hazard evaluation needs to address and review roadway
information, traffic volumes, pedestrian volumes, parking and/or
loading zones, traffic control devices, sidewalks, fencing,
accident history, and current speed zones.
I will have a copy of the "GUIDE" at the november 7th agenda
session for further discussion.
N
