MEMO TO: Mayor and City Council
Clerk -Administrator Pauley
FROM: Public Works Foreman Ulrich(
DATE: December 12, 1988
SUBJECT: HIRING OF PUBLIC WORKS MAINTENANCE PERSON
On December 6 and 7, 1988, Police Chief Ramacher, Public Works
Director Minetor and myself interviewed eight prospective
candidates out of approximately 170 applications for the position
of Public Works Maintenance Person. Although all eight of these
candidates were perceived as qualified to fill this position, two
of them inparticular were stand -outs in our opinion. The first
being Daniel K. Rundell who had workers for the Public Works
Department in Andover for approximately 6 months and is now
working for a private contractor, and the second being Jaffrey
C. Wienke, Sr. who has worked construction for a St. Paul firm
and is currently working for the City of St. Paul Public Wons
Department. Although both of these individuals intervi.ewed well,
reference checks favor the appointment of Jeffrey Wienke over
Daniel Rundell. Mr. Wienke has worked for the City of St. Paul
from April of 1986 to present. I received a very good
recommendation from his immediate supervisor for all aspects of
public works. Mr. Rundell's reference check was favorable,
however, his experience ir. snow plowing and equipment operation
was limited.
Based or all information available, my recommendation is %hat
Jeffery C. Wienke, Sr. be offered the position of Public Works
Maintenance person starting at the Maintenance II wage of $12.46
per hour. Mr. Wienke will be hired at the Maintenance II
level based on his previous experience.' I believe his
appointment to this position would bring the City a well-rounded
person with experience and an attitude that would be welcomed to
our environment.
MU/BAC
11,
