Ia
CONGRESSIONAL RECOGNITION
. t &I
eo VOW01 VVII 101lalru
e sue,
> a Ao P&OCEEDLNGH S AND DEBATM OF TH
11:V CpNGRg,.S ptRS" SESSIOV
VOL !)i WASHINGTON, WEDNESDAY. SEPTEMBER 9, 4997 `
Na IJJ
Senate
COUNTDOWN 2001
Excel ptS from a statement made by Senator Donald Riegle ojMiehigan before the US. Senate:
Mr. President, today I rise to bring to the atten-
tion of my colleagues an organization which was
founded by natives of Michigan.
This organization, COUNTDOWN 2001, is
based in Washington and was founded to help
individuals and organizations meet the challenge
of creating a better 21st century. With an eye
toward an enlightened future, COUNTDOWN
2001 serves as an active clearinghouse for inror-
madon and ideas, provides educational programs
rnd materials which stimulate an interest in the
21st century, and assists ;n the development and
implementation of programs for organizations
which seek to positively shape the future.
As we enter the 21st century, we are faced with
important questions aboutourfuture. How will we
meet the challenge of an ever-increasing nuclear
arms race? What is the most effective way in
which to educate our youth for the "information
age' of computers, robotics, and telecommunica-
tions? How will the world face the global envimn-
mental problems which affect us all?
These are just a few of the many Issues that
confront us. They require intelligent, thoughtful,
and creative thinking. In order to meet these
challenges, we must plan now for our transition
into die next century.
On a nonpartisan basis, COUNTDOWN 2001
focuses on producing a framework of navigation
toward the newcentury....... Crnsmxtirgaframe-
worl: for people and organizations at nationa: and
community lee,els to work cooperatively for the
common goal ofereating a betterfuture is certainly
necessary, and something in which each individual
can take part. As a U.S. Senator, I must always
keep an eye to the future. It is no simple task, and
easy answer, are few and far between.
I am pleased to join COUNTDOWN 200I in
encouraging foresight and creative thought from
individuals and organizations as we near the 21st
century. We must recognize our ability tocreate a
future of promise for new generations, a future in
which we can be proud to have played a pact.
