E <br />lic Works En ineerin De artment - The Public <br />ks Engineering Department is responsible for <br />rall direction of the City's Public Works <br />functions, maintenance operations, and building <br />inspection activities. The major areas of services <br />provided by the department are as follows: <br />a. Engineering services for water, sewer, street, <br />traffic, and development review. <br />b. Coordination of all department responsibilities <br />and activities. <br />c. City water production, treatment, filtration, and <br />distribution are provided by 6 deep wells. <br />Chlorination and fluouridation equipment is <br />provided for treatment, three filtration plants <br />are operated for removal of iron and manganese, <br />and 250,000 feet of water mains, valves, and 400 <br />hydrants are maintained for distribution. <br />d. The sanitary sewer collection system consists of <br />3 lift stations, 235,000 feet of sewer mains, and <br />900 manholes. <br />e. There are 40 miles of streets under the City's <br />jurisdiction. In addition, 1,352 traffic signs <br />are maintained by City forces. <br />f. Maintenance of 33 City vehicles and other City <br />equipment. <br />g. Parks maintenance coordination and direction. <br />h. Building inspection, fire inspection, housing <br />inspection, and plan review. <br />The current goals of the department call for <br />improving the delivery of services through more <br />productive equipment, improved work scheduling, and <br />appropriate <br />response to maintenance needs. <br />Specific objectives for 1989 and 1990 are as follows; <br />updating the existing capital improvement <br />programs in Streets, Water and Sewer to <br />provide a coordinated 5 year Capital <br />Improvements Program including long range <br />goals. <br />
