r MEMO TO: MAYOR AND COUNCILMEMBERS <br />FROM: MARY SAARION, DIRECTOR <br />PARKS, RECREATION AND FORESTRY <br />DATE: JANUARY 3, 1989 <br />SUBJECT: SKATING RINKS <br />This is a list of opening dates for neighboring cities skating <br />rinks: <br />December 16 Anoka <br />December 17 New Brighton <br />December 17 Shoreview (had to close 3 days that week due to 4U <br />degree weather) <br />December 16 6 20 Spring Lake Park (opened one rink early, the others <br />later) <br />December 20 Fridley <br />December 21 Arden Hills <br />December 23 Mounds View <br />December 23 Blaine <br />December 23 Columbia Heights <br />The City of Mounds View advertised the opening of neighborhood <br />skating rinks on Saturday, December 17, weather permitting. <br />Unfortunately, skating rinks were not established before December 23 <br />due to warm weather in early December and 40 degree above weather <br />the week of December 19. Some cities chose to flood rinks on double <br />shifts, during the night and morning, to establish early ice. The <br />City of Mounds View does do this on occasion when the weather is <br />favorable. This is very costly because of overtime wages and also <br />depletes the crew for daytime duties. For this reason, Rick <br />Minetor, Mike Ulrich and 1 agreed that to spend an exhorbitant <br />amount of time for ice establishment when the weather was <br />unfavorable was a waste of time and money. <br />As you know, most of the listed cities, have a separate park crew <br />designated only for parks work. The City of Mounds View parks crew <br />also functions in the public works pool and spends time on snow <br />plowing, vehicle maintenance, and water main breaks; all of which <br />00 took place during the December 17 - December 31 timespan. <br />MS/SL <br />Attachment <br />
