r
TO: Mayor & Council
FROM: Don Brager, Finance Director
c
DATE: November 1, 1989
SUBJECT: Purchase of Personal Computer
The purchase of a personal computer and software for the
Accounting Clerk was included in the 1989 Budget. The amount
budgeted was 36,000. A personal computer was purchased for
$1,493 which resulted in the purchase being under budget by
S4,507. This savings was due to the purchase of a p c clone
rather than a dame brand model and by not purchasing a as one that was not being used by Parks & Recreation couldbe
used instead of purchasing a new one. In addition 32,500 that
was budgeted for investment analysis software has not been
expended. Thus, $7,007 is available for further expenditure.
Staff proposes to use those unexpended funds to purchase a
new personal computer and a laser printer for the Finance
Director.
The present personal computer used by the Finance Director
is a %T model, which is the first model of personal computer
to be put on the market with a hard disk drive. It has a
processor that is three generations old compared to models being
sold today. As a consequence it has very slow processing speeds
and is not well suited to large financial models, such as the
City budget. A personal computer with an 80386 prooessor is
needed to efficiently process financial data. In addition a
laser printer is proposed to produce better quality graphics for
the budget and other financial documents and presentations.
Staff obtained quotes from three firms on the personal computer.
They are as follows:
1) 2eos International $3,807.00
2) Wahl & Wahl 3,924.00
3) Northgate Computer Systems 3,374.00
Staff recommends purchase of the computer from Norhtgate
Computer Systems.
Staff has also obtained three quotes on a Hewlitt-Packard
Laseriet IIP printer. This is a new model and is considered a
personal Laser printer as compared to their previous models
which are more heavy duty and designed for intense use by
word processing personnel. The quotes obtained are as follows:
1)
2)
Wahl
Dodd
& Wahl
Technical Supply
S1,162 .00
3)
Entre
Computer Systems
1,162.00
1,049.00
