What would you put into it?"
That's what the children. at Pinewood Elementary School will
be asked when nationally acclaimed architect Robert S.
Leathers comes to their school on November 18 for their
-•'?_;
playground Design Day.
*=
Design Day is the first stage of the Pinewood Playground
Project which the PTA authorized at its September 15
meeting. Prior to Design Day the children will make on -site
visits to unique playgrounds, do drawings, build replicas,
write essays and songs in preparation for the event. On
"round table" discussions
Design Day the architect will hold
teachers, playground committee members
with the children,
and the community as well as make the first schematic design-+
suited for the Pinewood -Mounds View community. Children
will watch the architect while he works on the actual
design.
Robert S. Leathers, Architect, is well known for his
creative playground projects, which he has built in over 350 .
communities around tte country. A Leathers pleground at
Pinewood will be Lhe first in the Minneapolis/St. Paul
netrop'_itan area, the only other in the State being in
Braham, Mn. His playgrounds are a collaboration of the
professloudl architect, children, and adult volunteers. The
result is a unique, imaginative, safe, quality playground.
Development takes place in three parts:
DESIGN: The proposed site is assessed, children's
teachers', parents' and community input is obtained, and
schematic drawings are rendered.
ORGANIZATION: Volunteer coordinators form a core committee
which organizes all aspects of the playground using outlines
from the architect. Volunteers will raise funds, secure
donated materials and tools and organize tools, food,
childcare and volunteers for construction weekend.
