1987 LONG-TERM FINANCIAL PLAN <br />Page Thirteen <br />with the installation of new computer system in 1986, word <br />processing capabilities were realized. it is anticipated the <br />officers will be using dictaphone/tape players to improve report <br />writing efficiency. Currently, officers are writing all their <br />reports by hand. By dictating their reports, it's anticipated <br />that officers will spend less time behind a desk and more time <br />patrolling. Additional clerical staff may be required to <br />transcribe the reliorts. <br />The Police Department will be evaluating the feasibility of a <br />Joint Powers Agreement with the City of New Brighton for a School <br />Liaison Officer. The Liaison Officer would be officed at <br />Irondale High School but would regularly visit at the Junior <br />High and Elementary Schools. The Officer's primary duties would <br />be to assist school aged children with their problems and to <br />assist in juvenile criminal investigation. <br />During 1981, the Police Department will be studying two new <br />programs. The first will be the creation of a School Liaison <br />Officer, as discussed above, the second will be the creation of a <br />Canine Unit. Both programs in preliminary discussion stages with <br />possible implementation occurring in 1989 or 1990. <br />
