interoffice
MEMORAN DUM
to: PARKS & RECREATION COMMISSION
from: MARY SAARION
subject: 1997 PROJECTS
date: March 12, 1997
There are a few projects that survived the 1997 budget. Those projects are as follows:
* The commencement of a Community Gardens at Woodcrest Park which will
provide space for persons who wish to garden either vegetables, flowers, or both.
The garden plots are being reserved for $5.00/plot. As you recall, this program
was initiated as a use for Woodcrest Park which is basically undevelopable because
of the extremely high water table. A water supply will be provided from the
hydrant as well as the installation of a garden barn where tools and supplies will be
stored. Already, 8 garden plots have been reserved as of March 12, 1997.
* The City Hall youth ballfield will be scheduled for use in June, allowing the spring
months for additional "grow-in" time for the new seed. A simple backstop will be
. installed just before it is open for use. The infield needs to be regraded, field
alignment measured, installation of pitching and homeplates and players benches.
It should prove to be a nice youth field for Little Sluggers - Juniors Softball.
* The Cushman field grooming vehicle was on its last legs all last year, requiring
many hours of maintenance. Parts were no longer available for it so Steve had to
make parts or modify parts in order to keep it running. The cushman was
scheduled for replacement last year, but was delayed one year. It will be replaced
this year. Requests for bids have been publicized and bid opening is March 27.
Hoping that more than one vehicle will provide a price break, the golf course and
parks went together with the bid, requesting different accessories as needed for the
various uses. This Park vehicle runs from early April to the end of October, every
day for several hours of field grooming, lining, painting, hauling ag-lime and
equipement, scarifying, leveling, and brushing fields for play.
* Playground equipment replacement program, similar to the vehicle replacement
program supposes that a certain amount is budgeted each year for the replacement
of equipment. $20,000 has been budgeted for this replacement program. While
$20,000 does not replace current equipment, the idea is that money is accumulated
and then when enough is available, the most needed equipment replacement is
done. Groveland Park equipment is in dire need of replacement. Replacement
. parts have been installed many times, graffiti that is unable to be removed is
available for children to see, and many parts are actually retrofitted because parts
