MOUNDS VIEW PARKS AND RECREATION COMMISSION
• MEETING MINUTES
THURSDAY, MAY 22, 1997
CALL TO ORDER: Chair Burmeister called the meeting to order.
ROLL CALL: Commissioners present included Chair Burmeister, Commissioners Silvis,
Dentz, and Stevenson. Director Saarion was also present.
MINUTES: Commissioner Silvis made a motion to approve the minutes of April 24,
1997. Commissioner Dentz seconded the motion. Motion passed
unanimously.
HWY 10 CORRIDOR
REVIEW: Commissioner Stevenson reviewed the concept proposal for the Hwy 10
corridor highlighting the "loop". Members asked questions for
clarification, offered suggestions, critiques and other ideas.
• GROVELAND
PLAYGROUND: Commissioners and Director Saarion discussed options for replacing the
playground equipment to bring it up to safety standards. The old
playground is about 15 years old and is ready for replacement. Director
Saarion had met with a representative of MN Playground, Inc. Which is the
distributor of the playground equipment. He offered options including
saving the tornado slide (repainting, taking out one section to make its
height safety compliant, and providing a new top and stairway). This
would provide a great cost savings as such slides are typically over $6,000.
The old stainless steel slide is not made anymore and is faster than the
current plastic slides - kids like them better. Also, it was suggested that
the WOM be sectioned and used after re-painting with the addition of a
WOM head - making it an appealing climber. The swings can be repainted
and reused with only a shortening of the posts for compliance to safety
standards of 10 feet versus 12 feet. A new placement would also provide
adequate safety area which is in non-conformance currently. The preschool
slide, spring animals and the diggers can also be re-used with minor safety
modifications. Everything else was identified as beyond salvage. Game
Time suggested that the budgeted amount of$20,000 could provide
adequate component additions that will provide new Groveland Play
Structure that is fun and exciting and within playground safety standards.
• New playground materials have advanced in anti-graffiti agents making
graffiti removal much more successful.
