There are no pressing issues to discuss although the Department has had some difficulties the last several weeks. One problem has been community-wide graffiti - which has hit the parks as well. Last week Greenfield was hit with graffiti three times. Removing graffiti is labor intensive and therefore takes time away from other parks tasks. A Ramsey County Task Force has been formed to try to catch the perpetrators. No luck yet. So we keep painting over graffiti as it appears in the parks. Hillview and Greenfield Parks have been most frequently hit. Another frustration is the lack of Water Safety Instructors. Our swimming programs are nearly • full but we can't find enough instructors to teach. This is a problem that other surrounding schools and Parks and Recreation Departments are having - even the YMCA's are having problems! We are hosting a meeting Monday, September 22 at 10:00 a.m. with other surrounding organizations to brainstorm ideas of dealing with this wide-spread problem. Recruitment and training with our own curriculum will probably be an option. I will let you all know what problem solving ideas the group comes up with. The City Newsletters were later than usual this Fall and for that reason many of our Fall programs had to be delayed for one or more weeks which requires a lot of calling and re- arranging of program details.
