STATE OF MINNESOTA
RESOLUTION APPROVING JOB DESCRIPTION FOR GROUP
FITNESS INSTRUCTOR AND AUTHORIZE HIRING FOR THE
POSITION
WHEREAS, Council recommended approval of the City operating a Parks and
Recreation Department during their October 12, 2020 meeting; and
WHEREAS, a job description has been created for the Group Fitness Instructor
position; and
WHEREAS, the Human Resources Committee has had an opportunity to review
the job description; and
WHEREAS, staff is requesting authorization to hire up to three (3) part-time, non -
benefit positions, and eligible for PERA after 180 days of employment.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Mounds View City Council
Approves the Job Description for the Group Fitness Instructor as shown in Exhibit A
(attached), and authorizes staff to fill the position.

POSITION DESCRIPTION
Position Title:
Group Fitness Instructor
Department:
Parks and Recreation
Accountable to:
Director of Public Works/Parks and Recreation
Status:
Non -Exempt Part -Time
PRIMARY OBJECTIVE OF POSITON
This position is responsible to lead and coordinate group fitness training sessions to participants
of all ages and abilities. The Group Fitness Instructor will demonstrate excellent customer service
and communication skills; and is responsible to maintain a working knowledge of current fitness
industry practices in order to provide group fitness participants effective information and training.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED
Works under the general guidance and direction of the Parks and Recreation Superintendent.
SUPERVISION EXERCISED
None.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
• Plan and lead exercise/activity sessions in one or more assigned fitness areas.
• Ensure all necessary equipment is set up for class.
• Inspect equipment to ensure it is clean and in safe working order.
• Advise participants on program and class policies and procedures.
• Build effective, authentic relationships with participants, introducing them to other group
fitness members.
• Continually develop exciting, innovative workouts for group fitness members.
• Ensure safety and injury prevention policies and procedures are adhered to by participants.
• Report accidents and prepare accident reports, as instructed.
• Maintain working knowledge of wellness and trends to provide effective information and
support to group fitness members.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
• Minimum of 1-2 years related fitness experience.
• Recognized competency in field of instructional expertise.
• May require technical certification dependent on the instructional specialty (AFAA, ACE,
NETA, NASM, etc.).
• Certified in CPR, First Aid, AED or the ability to be certified within first 60 days of
employment.
NECESSARY KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
• Skilled in the use of first aid procedures.
• Ability to deliver quality programming within a diverse community setting.
• Skilled in time management with attention to punctuality.
• Knowledge of fitness training and education methods and techniques.
• Knowledge of exercise principles and technology.
• Knowledge of the operation and maintenance of fitness equipment and facilities.
• Ability to prepare routine administrative paperwork.
• Ability to read, understand, follow, and enforce safety procedures.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an
employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
This work regularly requires occasional exertion of up to 50 pounds of force; work regularly
requires standing, walking, and sitting, speaking or hearing, using arms to direct or motion, and
hands to point, handle or feel and repetitive motions and occasionally requires stooping, kneeling,
crouching or crawling, reaching with hands and arms and lifting; work requires close vision,
distance vision, ability to adjust focus, and depth perception; vocal communication is required for
expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word and conveying detailed or
important instructions to others accurately, loudly or quickly; hearing is required to perceive
information of spoken words; work requires observing general surroundings and activities; work
may require exposure to outdoor weather conditions and occasionally requires exposure to blood -
borne pathogens and may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee
encounters while performing the essential functions of this job.
The noise level in the work environment occasionally may become elevated due to high customer
volumes or activities.
SELECTION GUIDELINES
Formal application; rating of education/training and experience; oral interview; job related tests
may be required; reference checks, Minnesota Computerized Criminal History and Predatory
Offender Registry checks; and non -DOT pre -employment drug screen.
