CALL TO ORDER The meeting was called to order at 6: 55 p.m.
by Chairperson Wayne Burmeister after viewing
a video tape entitled "Spirit of Recreation" .
ROLL CALL Commissioners present : Commissioner Rowley,
Starr, Silvis and Chairperson Burmeister.
Councilmembers present: Councilmember Hankner

MINUTES A motion was made by Commissioner Silvis,
seconded by Commissioner Rowley to approve the
minutes as written. Motion passed unanimously
4 ayes, 0 nays.
CHAIRPERSON' S REPORT None
• COUNCILMEMBER' S
REPORT Councilmember Hankner reported that the
council will be conducting a survey regarding
possible use of the portable classroom
building around various park sites in the
City. The survey will find out who is living
around the parks and what specific programs
are of interest to them.
SPRING/SUMMER
BROCHURE Director Saarion reviewed the spring and
summer recreation programs and answered
questions from the Commission.
MUSKRATS AT SILVER
VIEW PARK Director Saarion stated that she had contacted
the Department of Natural Resources regarding
the muskrat problem at Silver View Park. They
referred her to a licensed trapper. Staff
indicated that there is a large population of
muskrats in Silver View Park causing erosion
to the banks of the pond and that muskrats
also carry disease that are transmitted to
humans. Because of this, staff felt that the
animals should be trapped and disposed of .
• However, the cost is quite high. Chairperson
Burmeister advised Director Saarion to
investigate the alternatives to paying a
licensed trapper, i .e. allowing trappers in
during hunting season, and report the results
to the Commission at a later meeting.

WOODCREST PARK Staff reported that the tot lot was started
and should be done by June 22.
GROVELAND TENNIS •
COURTS Staff reported that two sheets of asphalt had
been layed on May 28 and the fencing is next.
The surface work was scheduled to begin the
week of June 6.
OTHER BUSINESS The commission inquired about the depth of
Spring Lake and whether or not the St. Paul
Waterworks would be adding any water soon.
Staff said that the Waterworks Department was
watching the levels and would be adding water
shortly before opening the beach.
COMMENTS FROM THE
FLOOR Resident Mary Mitchell ( from the Silver View
Park area) asked the commission about their
plans to complete the trail around Silver View
pond. The commission informed her that the
first priority will be to finish the section
along Mr. Trettel ' s yard and connect to the
easement. The second priority is to finish
the path from Long Lake Road to County Road H2
along the Scotland Green Apartment area. The
third priority will be to finish the section
along the southwest side of the path.
Ms. Mitchell stated that because the •
comprehensive plan indicated a bridge would be
installed and that the path would not be
completed around the pond, she felt it
should be abided by. Commissioner Starr
informed Ms. Mitchell that the plan was not
realistic at this time and should be revised
to reflect the current budgetary limitations .
Ms. Mitchell asked the commission to please
inform her and the other residents around
Silver View Park before any construction of a
trail is begun. Chairperson Burmeister
indicated that the commission would do so.
ADJOURNMENT A motion was made by Commissioner Silvis,
seconded by Chairperson Burmeister to adjourn
the meeting at 7: 50 p.m. Motion passed
unanimously 4 ayes, 0 nays.
