CITY OF MOUNDS VIEW
COUNTY OF RAMSEY
STATE OF MINNESOTA
URGING THE STATE OF MINNESOTA AND UNITED STATES TO DECLARE
ELECTION DAY IN THE UNITED STATES AS A NATIONAL HOLIDAY
WHEREAS, the United States is the largest democracy in the history of the world,
and
WHEREAS, only 5 states in the United States have declared Election Day as a
Paid Holiday with 9 others declaring it as a public holiday but do not required paid
time off, and
WHEREAS, the United States ranks 31 st out of 50 democracies in voter turnout
with Uruguay (94.9% and Turkey leading the world (89%; and
WHEREAS, in the 2022 Presidential Election, voter turnout was 62.8%, and
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the City of Mounds
View, Ramsey County, Minnesota as follows:
1. Request and advocate the Minnesota State Legislature and Governor pass
legislation that the State of Minnesota should join with Illinois, West Virginia,
Maryland, New York and Hawaii as States designating Election Day as a paid
State Holiday.
2. Request and advocate that our federally elected members of Congress and the
President of the United States declare Election Day in the United States as a
National Holiday.
3. That the City of Mounds View recognizes Election Day as a Paid Holiday for all
eligible Employees.
