HomeMy WebLinkAboutCOMMISSION_MINUTES_2000-07-26 • MOUNDS VIEW Exhibit A Parks & Recreation Commission July 26, 2000, 6:30 pm Minutes Commissioners present: Sherry Gunn, Rich Sonterre, Dawn Little, Theresa Lexcen, Mike Szczepanski, and Frank Silvis. Commissioner absent: Tony Zuk, Stan McDonald, Dave Long Staff present: Terri Blattenbauer(YMCA), and Mike Ulrich (City of Mounds View). A motion was made to approve the minutes from June 28 by Rich, seconded by Sherry. Resident, Cliff Ash was available to present to the Commission, a committee of private citizens to advise the Commission of concerns and issues with the Silver Lake Woods area and pond. Cliff will report at the August Park & Recreation Commission meeting. Staff reported to Commission on the status of program planning and development for • Fall, 2000. Newly added or enhanced programming includes: Teen night additions, and relations with New Brighton, Regional competitive, NFL Punt, Pass, & Kick contest, Teen Leaders peer group, holiday shopping parent's day out, special school day's out activities, and the JCPenney opportunity to provide activity at the MV Manufactured homes. Commissioners received two YMCA publications in last months mailing. It was the consensus of the group that staff continue to send these updated pieces regularly. Two newspaper articles were distributed to Commissioners regarding reports on unsafe playground equipment and steps to improve playground safety. The group was encouraged to read and comment. Staff indicated that the timeline for budgets would not allow enough time to follow through with the neighborhood park focus groups. The purpose of the meeting was to confirm that park improvements indicated by the Commission would concur with the residents in Mounds View. Due to the timeline, the group suggested a dollar amount be asked for in the budget process, and priorities be addressed at that time. Rich made a motion to request $150,000 in the 2001 budget, to include a park building and other improvements designated priorities. Seconded by Sherry. Motion carries. • • There was discussion on Greenfield Park and frequent users of the baseball field. It was indicated by the Commission that the Irondale Baseball Association should be more involved with repairs and enhancements to the park. Sherry made a motion to get the IBL involved with the Greenfield baseball field. Seconded by Mike S. Motion carries. In other business, staff reviewed the letter sent to Mayor Dan and copied to Commissioners regarding the youth resident's wish for a skate park in Mounds View.
