45 <br />REQUEST FOR COUNCIL CONSIDERATION FOR COUNCIL CONSIDERATION <br />Meeting Date: July 22, 2014 <br />Adoption of Safe Routes to Schools Plan. <br />Before you tonight is the Wilshire Park Elementary Safe Routes to School Plan. The <br />comprehensive plan outlines the vision and planning of the project, describes existing <br />conditions in St. Anthony, infrastructure recommendations, program recommendations and <br />an implementation strategy. Recommended improvements are highlighted on page 17. Staff <br />is requesting a motion to approve the Wilshire Park Elementary Safe Routes to School Plan. <br />In February 2013 staff submitted the application for the Safe Routes to School Grant (SRTS). <br />The City of St. Anthony in a joint venture with the St. Anthony -New Brighton School District <br />and the Minnesota Department of Transportation was awarded the grant in April 2013. The <br />grant covered professional planning services. <br />A planning committee consisted of the following City staff, Chuck Autio, Mark Casey, Jay <br />Hartman, Kelsey Johnson, Justin Messner and John Ohl. Along with staff, parents and <br />students of the school district, the committee met numerous times in person and by <br />conference calls throughout the past year. At the January 28, 2014, City Council meeting Lisa <br />Austin, Minnesota Department of Transportation and Coordinator for Safe Routes to Schools <br />presented a general overview of what SRTS is, why it is important and what is being done in <br />St. Anthony. In addition to the meetings, an open house was held on May 5, 2014 to solicit <br />comments on the draft plan. <br />
