She said she thought the trailer
2 gave a "tacky look to the City" and only proved her first conclusion
3 that "such facilities never come down once they're allowed."
4 Councilmember Enrooth agreed that this was just another instance of deja
5 vu, where businesses "once they get one of these facilities up try to
6 stretch their use as long as they can because they are an extremely
7 economical form of rent."
8 Councilmember Ranallo indicated he perceived the trailer had already
9 been in use for more than a year and "a few more months can't make that
10 much difference." Mayor Sundland said he was somewhat of the same
11 opinion, but thought the City ought to take a more active role in
12 assuring that the facility is removed by April 1st. He warned Mike
13 Donatelle and Bob Olson of Minnesota Scientific who were present, that
14 "the Council would probably not look with favor on any further exten-
15 sions of the deadline." He then invited their comments.
16 Mr. Donatelle, who was accompanied by his brother, Charles, took full
17 responsibility for overlooking the deadline date saying it had just
18 been an oversight on their part not to have approached the City sooner
19 about an extension. He said he had never realized that not doing so
20 would create so many problems for his tenants. The Donatelle Properties
21 spokesman assured the Council that the temporary facility "would be down
22 by April 1st, or even before that date."
c3 Mr. Olson told the Council the trailer had not really been the
24 convenience they thought for his company because with no water connec-
25 tions in the trailer, the salesmen who worked there had to go to the
26 main building to use the restroom facilities. He said his firm had made
27 a thorough search of the area for office space and the Donatelle
28 building in New Brighton was the only one which had space which met
29 their needs. The Minnesota Scientific representative indicated he was
30 certain the "New Brighton space would be available at the latest by
31 April 1st."
32 Mayor Sundland indicated he perceived an even split on the Council- on
33 the issue and with the concurrence of the proponents, deferred official
34 action on the extension until Councilmember Marks arrived and a full
35 vote of the Council was possible.
36
37
11
38 Because there was no one present from the Salvation Army, Commissioner
39 Brownell drew the Council's attention to Pages 10 and 11 of the
40 Commission minutes where the discussions with the Camp Manager and
41 Colonel Smith of the Salvation Army were reported along with the
42 Commissioners' unanimous recommendation that the Council approve the
n3 Master Plan which "would bring Silver Lake Camp into the 20th Century."
He reported that new administration and maintenance/garage buildings
45 were proposed to be constructed at this time and pointed out that the
