Maintenance <br />Test smoke alarms at least once a month using the test button. <br />Smoke alarms with non-replaceable batteries are designed to remain <br />effective for up to manufactures designated span. If the alarm chirps, <br />warning the battery is low, replace the entire smoke detector right <br />away. <br />Alarms with other types of batteries need a new battery at least once <br />a year. If the alarm chirps, warning the battery is low, replace the <br />battery right away. <br />As always, any type of smoke detector should be replaced when it is <br />10 years from the manufacturer date (found on the back of the <br />detector) <br />Always remember to follow manufacturer’s instructions on proper <br />cleaning to keep smoke alarms working. <br />Other Considerations <br />CO alarms – <br />10 feet of every sleeping room or in sleeping room <br />Test Monthly <br />Debris around venting –furnace, dryer, fireplace oven <br />Home Escape Planning <br />Have a plan and practice with your family <br />Explain smoke detectors to them <br />Call Fire Department with any questions or if you need assistance with <br />your smoke alarm. <br />19
