l
League of Minne8ota CitleQ5
Municipal JDrografn
MAID)
The League of Minnesota Cities formed the Municipal Amicus Program in March
working with the Minnesota Association of City Attorneys. The program offers
support to cities that are involved in litigation or other forms of controversy that
may have significant statewide impact on the organization, operation, power, and
duties of Minnesota's cities.
The program will concentrate on cases that may have a substantial impact on muni-
cipal law through appellate court decisions.
A board of directors will administer the program. Board members will include the
four officers of the Minnesota Association of City Attorneys, two League of Minne-
sota- Cities board-members, the executive-director-of—the :League and the League's --- --
general counsel, and others the board may designate. The board's responsibility is to
review requests for amicus (friend of the court) briefs from member cities and other
municipal units.
The existence of the Minnesota Court of Appeals has greatly increased the number
of Minnesota court decisions that establish statewide precedent. Without the Muni-
cipal Amicus Program the League of Minnesota Cities would not be able to ade-
quately influence the development of judge-made law impacting.Minnesota cities.
Dues-for participating in the Municipal Amicus Program, are 10 percent of regular
League dues or five percent if your city attorney is a member of the League CLEAR
program.
Further information -on participation in the Municipal Amicus Program can be
obtained by writing to.MAP, League of Minnesota Cities, 183 University Ave. E., St. •
Paul, MN 55101, Phone (612) 227-5600.
