(The Sen-
ate passed it 56-1 last spring.) We are grateful
for the work of chief author Leo J. Reding of Aus-
tin and the other authors who worked hard to get
this bill passed. The four negative votes were cast
by Representatives Dawkins of St. Paul and Kahn,
Greenfield and Long of Minneapolis. The governor
signed the bill into law March 10.
Citizens throughout the state are stepping up
their efforts to rid their communities of filth this
year. Groups are conducting business surveys and
meeting with elected law enforcement officials to
tell them about the law and the problem of
obscenity right in their own communities.
CLEAN UP is happy to report that related anti-
pornography legislation has been introduced by
state legislators friendly to our case. Proposed
legislation includes civil law remedies against
"adult enterprises"; a statewide Display Law
requiring sexually explicit material to be behind
an opaque cover or separated in a private room
in any establishment where children may be
present; also a possible AIDS health law aimed at
adult enterprises such as the ordinance currently
under consideration in Minneapolis.
These are extraordinary developments that are
stretching the CLEAN UP office's capacity to
provide information and, give testimony at the
Chief author of the successful Obscenity Fix-Up Legislature.
