1 City's liquor operations might be the next avenue for such support.
2 Mayor Sundland indicated .that request had already been made. •
3 DEPARTMENTS AND COMMISSIONS
4 Brief discussions preceded orders to file the following:
5 *March Fire Department Report
6 *January Finance Report
7 CITY MANAGER
8 April 5, 1989 Staff Meeting Notes
9 Mr. Childs indicated his desire to "wrap up" all pending matters before
10 he leaves had resulted in longer staff meetings than usual and he
11 invited Council questions about issues on which they might have
12 special concerns.
13 Councilmember Makowske complimented the Public Works Department on the
14 "super job" they are doing on sweeping the City streets. Staff
15 explained , the necessity for sweeping down hill which might have
16 resulted in residents in the lower portions_ of the City thinking
17 their streets weren't ever going to be done. Mr. Hamer indicated his
18 department had 33 miles of street to be swept. He also told
19 Councilmember Marks that the City's policy was to inspect all the
20 sidewalks both in the spring and fall. The Councilmember indicated •
21 he had drawn Ms. VanderHeyden's attention to the potential for
22 problems posed by having two water shutoff valves sticking up above
23 the sidewalk surfaces. Mr. Hamer assured him that just as soon as
24 his department received the necessary patching materials, those
25 protrusions would be corrected.
26 The Silver Lake Residents' problems with geese will be aired at a
27 Council Public Hearing set for April 25th. As reported in the
28 Assistant to the City Manager's portion of the Staff Meeting Notes,
29 the hearing had been scheduled in response to requests from lake
30 residents to hire Dr. Cooper, a specialist in the field of geese
31 removal to undertake a 3 year removal program. Mr.- Childs recalled
32 that not all lake residents had been convinced such a program was
33 desirable at first, causing the Council to decide not to act on the
34 initial Silver Lake Homeowners Association request until they had
35 better organized that support. He said he perceived that must have
36 _ happened because a public hearing had also been requested for Columbia
37 Heights to consider a program under which St. Anthony, Columbia
38 Heights and the Silver Lake Residents Association would each pay
39 $333 .00 a year for the next three years.
40 The Manager said he perceived the Association must have overcome the
41 strong division among lake residents demonstrated last fall because
`42 the proponents have said they expect little or no opposition to the
43 proposal at either hearing.
10 •
