2
1 for the one-foot variance . In response to a question by
2 Chairman Madden, Assistant .VanderHeyden responded that the
3 east wall of the existing garage is 15 inches inside the
4 property line on one side and that it lines up with an
5 existing chain link fence on the other side .
6
7 Chairman Madden invited Mr . Drews to present his request to
8 the Commission. Mr . Drews replied that he is proposing to
9 build a new garage which will conform to the angular shape
10 of his lot . He stated that the existing garage is 15 inches
11 from the property line on one side and right on the property
12 line on the other side . He intends to bring the east wall
13 of the garage south 21 inches , building it three feet from
14 the property line , with the overhang being two feet from the
15 property line . He pointed out that the neighboring lot is a
16 double lot and that his garage would be relatively distant
17 from the house on that lot .
18
19 Anne Grassman , 2608 Murray Avenue NE, commented that she
20 felt the neighborhood was ample for a three-car garage and
21 had no objection to Mr . Drews building one . She noted,
22 however , that the alley in her neighborhood has been
23 neglected for three years because of a lack of maintenance
24 funds .
25
26 Ms . Grassman stated that Mr . Drews is currently unable to
27 bring his truck onto his property using his own driveway
28 exclusively, although his neighbor to the west allows Mr .
29 Drews to use his property for maneuvering. She said that ,
30 while such an arrangement might be convenient now, a new
31 neighbor might find it unacceptable. Future conflicts
32 might develop between neighbors because of incorrect
33 surveying or because city officials who approved variances
34 are no longer in office and current officials decline to
35 take responsibility for decisions they did not make .
36
37 Ms . Grassman stated that she lives across from a public
38 place and that people frequently turn around using her
39 property. Two of her brand-new rain pipes were run over on
40 two separate occasions, indicating that the alleyway is not
41 wide enough for traffic to maneuver. She stated that her
42 health prevents her from maintaining her property with the
43 degree of care she would prefer , and expressed a desire for
44 people ' s consideration of others ' property.
45
46 Commissioner Wagner asked Mr . Drews whether he could move
47 the garage one foot and avoid the variance entirely, or if
48 his plan for the new garage was simply his personal
49 preference . Mr . Drews replied that it was his preference t
50 have the one foot in front of his garage rather than in back
