SHOPPING CENTER: Any group of four or more occupant retail or <br /> service establishments on one or more contiguous tracts of land in single ownership, <br /> compromising over 75,000 square feet of floor area with parking provided on the <br /> tract or tracts of land for use in common by patrons. <br /> Subd. 28. SIGN: Any structure, device, advertisement or visual representation <br /> intended to visually advertise, identify or communicate information, or to visually <br /> attract the attention of the public for any purpose unless located within a building <br /> and not visible from the exterior of the building. Without limiting the generality of <br /> the foregoing, the term includes any symbols, letters, figures, illustrations or forms <br /> painted, or otherwise affixed to a building or structure, any beacon or search light <br /> intended to attract the attention of the public for any purpose,and any structure or <br /> device the prime purpose of which is to border, illuminate, animate or project visual <br /> representation. Notwithstanding the foregoing,the term sign shall not include official <br /> notices issued by any court or governmental body, notices posed by a public official <br /> in the performance of official duties,-or traffic control signs established pursuant to <br /> governmental authority. <br /> Subd. 29. . SIGN SURFACE AREA: The area in square feet of the smallest <br /> rectangular figure which circumscribes the area enclosed by the actual copy of a sign <br /> including both sides of a sign with copy on both sides and including border and trim <br /> of the sign. The supports, uprights or structures in which any sign is supported will • <br /> not be included in determining the sign area. <br /> Subd. 30. STREET: A public highway, road, alley or thoroughfare. <br /> Subd. 31. STRIP MALL: Any group of four or more occupant retail or service <br /> establishments on one or more contiguous tracts of land in single ownership, <br /> compromising 7,500 to 75,000 square feet of floor area with parking provided on the <br /> tract or tracts of land for use in common by patrons. <br /> Subd. 32. TEMPORARY SIGN: Any sign, banner, pennant, valance or <br /> advertising display constructed of cloth, canvas, light fabric or cardboard, wallboard <br /> or other light materials with or without frames; intended to be displayed for a limited <br /> period of time only. <br /> Subd. 33. WALL SIGN: A flat sign which does not extend more than 18 inches <br /> from the face or wall of the building upon which it is affixed, painted or attached,, <br /> running parallel for its whole length to the face or wall of the building, and which <br /> does not extend beyond the horizontal width of such building. <br /> Subd. 34. , WALL SURFACE: The total surface area of the building face to <br /> which the sign is attached, including windows. and door areas, measured to the <br /> extreme outer limits of the wall surface. • <br />
