The display of such sign shall be limited to a 6-month period. At the expiration of such period, the applicant may request a further extension of time, otherwise the sign must be removed. Subd. 9. TEMPORARY SIGNS, OTHER THAN POLITICAL SIGNS: Temporary signs, other than political signs, pertaining to drives or events of civic, philanthropic, educational or religious organizations, provided permission of the City Manager must be obtained to erect such signs upon or over public property and provided further that such signs shall not be erected or posted for a period of more than 14 days prior to the date of the event and must be removed within 3 days after the event. If prior permission is not obtained from the City Manager, the sign shall be removed immediately. Subd. 11. FLAGS AND EMBLEMS: Flags and emblems of governmental, civic, philanthropic, educational or religious organizations. Flags of the United States, the state, the city, foreign nationals having diplomatic relations with the United States, and any other flag adopted or sanctioned by an elected legislative body or competent jurisdiction, provided that such a flag shall not exceed 60 square feet in area and shall not be flown from a pole the top of which is more than 40 feet in height. These flags must be flown in accordance with protocol_established by the Congress of the United States for the Stars and Stripes. Any flag not meeting any one or more of these conditions shall be considered a temporary sign and shall be subject to regulation as such. Subd. 12. RESIDENTIAL REAL ESTATE SIGNS: Real estate signs, provided the combined sign surface area of such is not greater than 12 square feet. Real estate signs must be removed within 7 days after the closing date. Subd. 13. COMMERCIAL REAL ESTATE SIGNS: Real estate signs, provided the combined sign surface area of such is not greater than 32 square feet.
