The <br /> first flour mill was built near St. Anthony Falls in 1866. The partners, <br /> Cadwaller Washburn and John Crosby formed the Washburn-Crosby <br /> Company, producer of Gold Medal Flour. In 1924 the company lent its <br /> initials to a radio station, WCCO. <br /> • Pillsbury was founded in 1869. The "XXXX"symbol on the flour bags <br /> signified the highest quality. The company merged with General Mills in <br /> 2000. <br /> • Target Corporation began in 1902 when George Dayton opened the <br /> Dayton Dry Goods Company on the corner of 7th and Nicollet in <br /> Minneapolis. Dayton's opened Southdale, the first enclosed shopping mall <br /> in the nation, in 1956 in Hennepin County. The first Target store opened <br /> in 1962; there are now 1,107 Target stores operating in 47 states. <br /> • Medtronic, maker of the first reliable long-term implantable pacemaker, <br /> was founded in 1949 in Minneapolis.
