Population Forecast
The Metro Council projected Columbia Heights to have a 1990 population of 20,000 and to gain 250
additional households. As shown in Table 1, the actual population for the City was 18,910 and them;
was an increase of 423 households. The most recent Metro Council population projection (prior to the
1990 Census) for Columbia Heights is 20,000 for the year 2010 and they predict that household size,
for the entire metro area, will level-off at 2.57 persons in the 1990s. The Metro Council projects no
change in population for the Cities of Fridley, New Brighton, and St. Anthony from 1990 to 2000 while
Minneapolis is projected to lose 12,000 people. The population of Columbia Heights should remain near
its' 1990 level through the next decade.
Because Columbia Heights is fully developed, there is no open land available for additional housing--
except for a few scattered vacant lots. Because of the decrease in household size and lack of
undeveloped land, the only way for Columbia Heights to gain population is for the trend of household
size to reverse and/or add more housing units through redevelopment (replacing existing housing with
new housing at a higher density).
Employment
The numbers of jobs in Columbia Heights are shown by Table 4. There was a modest increase of 141
jobs (2.8%) from 1980 to 1990. The projections by the Metro Council have been optimistic--the actual
numbers of jobs in 1990 was only 87 percent of the projected number. If that trend were extended, then
the adjusted projection for 2000 would be 6,090 jobs (87% of 7,000).
A9425 5
1
