The. system includes approximately 318,000 linear feet of sewer mains ranging in size from 6-
inches to 33-inches in diameter. The City of Hilltop which• is located within the City of Columbia
Heights is also served by the collection system.
A majority of the sanitary sewers function under gravity flow; however, the collection system does
include four lift stations. The lift stations are located in the northern and eastern portions of the City
in areas where the existing topography does not allow gravity flow.
In the past, the sanitary sewer system has experienced problems including sags, roots and grease
buildups. These problems reduce the hydraulic capacity of the sewer system and limit the ability of the
system to adequately serve the City.
There are no waste water treatment facilities in the Columbia Heights and Hilltop area. Waste water
is collected by City systems, discharged to the Minneapolis and Fridley systems, and is ultimately treated
at the Metropolitan Waste Control Commission (MWCC) treatment plant at Pig's Eye Lake in St. Paul.
Waste water is discharged to the Minneapolis system at four locations and the Fridley system at one
location. The MWCC meters discharges at three of these outlet points, while the remaining two are not
metered due to their limited sewage flows.
09425 65
