13 SUMMARY Accomplishing our- goals in the most cost-saving manner-remained our prime goal during 1983. The following is a brief summary of our 1983 accomplishments. (1) Established- a:-,Hazardous Materials Team,. including five of. our Department's personnel and headed by a hazardous materials specialist. (2) Medical training sessions were conducted by our Emergency Med- ical Instructor to maintain our high level ofemergency response. In addition, fire and police personnel held joint EMS meetings periodically during the year. (31 The Department's Training Instructor held numerous training drills. (4) The Fire Reserves are again to be commended for an excellent year with their response calls and fill-ins during vacations, illnesses and severe weather conditions . (5) Our Department: was able .to- purchase a new f ire` pumper -in. 19 83 at a large cost savings for the City. This was accomplished through a joint purchasing program with four other fire com- munities. (6) Clothing -and fire turn out equipment were purchased through :the Joint Purchasing Consortium with substantial cost savings. This organization has proved to be an excellent way to purchase fire equipment of quality for the least cost and also tends to improve communication between the area fire communities. 17) -Two of our officers attended the Minnesota State .Fire<.Marshal 's . Refresher 40 Hour Code Seminar. This seminar enables our Department to keep abreast of the state fire code operations . (8) Public relations were promoted by Department personnel throughout the entire year, i.e. , public speaking, conducting .medical and fire courses, etc. (9) As Fire Chief , I am actively involved with the following organizations : a. President, Metro Paid Chiefs Association (2 year) . b. President, Fire Department Joint Purchasing Consortium. C. Projects Committee Chairman, Minnesota State-Fire Chiefs Association (.3 year) . ' d. Trustee, Capitol City Mutual Aid Association: I feel my.• participation rin. the above,.organizations has been beneficial. • in keeping the communication lines open between those organizations : and the. City. I plan to: continue my involvement in: 1984 , however, I -will reduce my commitments.-, somewhat.- to work closer-with - our. own, personnel and within they community .' Emphasis will be- placed on career-building within the- Department.
