Once the flow is mixed with the wastewater it becomes contaminated and must
be treated. However before mixing, the water is basically clean and it could be pumped
out to the ground surface.
This type of direct connection can be difficult to identify and difficult to correct.
Correction requires breaking a hole in the basement floor, installing a sump basket and
sump pump, patching the floor, and sealing the old drain tile connection. The sump
pump is electrical and it may be necessary to install a new electrical outlet to provide
power near the pump location. The pump discharge line is extended up and out of the
basement through'the foundation wall to the exterior ground surface. The water can be
used to "water"plants, shrubs, trees, etc. or discharged to the street. In areas where there
are significant numbers of street discharges it may be necessary to extend segments of
drain tile to carry the flow to a nearby catch basin.
In anticipation of a program to disconnect the drain tiles, several plumbers were
contacted to determine the potential cost of the work. The estimates ranged from $1,200
to $2,000, but each location will be unique and it is difficult to reliably predict the cost.
M i n n e a p o l i s S t .
