. a 'e'hon
Ior
D ATE : A P P R OVAL :
April 15 1988
T O : Planning Commission Members
F ROM
David M. Childs, City Manager
BONAVENTURA MALT SHOP/VIDEO ARCADE CONDITIONAL USE PERMIT
This is a .request from Michael Bonaventura for a conditional use permit to allow
him to operate a malt shop and video arcade at Apache Plaza. The exact location
would be in the southwest end of the old Montgomery Wards Auto Center (most
recently occupied by NAPA Auto Parts) .
Mr. Bonaventura states that the malt shop/video arcade would be:
*a youth oriented recreational facility;
*a tobacco-free environment;
*called "Bonos Malt Shop and Arcade":
*utilizing video game (amusement device) licenses currently held by Apache
Plaza;
*staffed to properly insure adequate supervision.
Mr. Bonaventura also indicated that the hours of operation would be limited, but I
can't recall the hours he had discussed with me.
As you may recall , a request for a video arcade was previously considered for the
vacant space in Apache Plaza immediately adjacent to Apache Wells Bar. There were
serious reservations about having a youth gathering place so close to a bar, and
the matter was sent back for further discussions with staff. The other concerns
with this previous request (Planning Commission and Council minutes are attached)
were: security personnel ; hours of operation; and possible loitering in the mall
and in the parking lot.
In this particular case, those concerns should also be considered and addressed, if
necessary, in the conditions finally recommended by the Commission.
The concerns about proximity to the bar would be greatly reduced with this
proposal , as would parking concerns since parking for the area is separated by
curbing from the main mall parking.
:cjk4.19.88
