■
■
CHAPTER 2: VILLAGE AT ST. ANTHONY IDENTITY
. The Village at St. Anthony is a mixed-use regional hub offer-
ing residential and commercial opportunities to St. Anthony
■ visitors and residents. The Village has its foundations in the
economic and natural history of St. Anthony Village, drawing
■ from a local diversity of presettlement ecosystems, the his-
toric cultivation of flowers in the area, and the village history
of the City. `
■ ,a arWSii
Historical Context
■
The City of St. Anthony Village was incorporated in 1946,
and began to grow very quickly as residents abandoned farm- N
■ ing and took to a more urban lifestyle. Early city councils
were occupied with the work of forming the new village. They
■ undertook land use planning, sewer and water service plan-
ning, and street construction. The Village, as it is widely
■ known, lives on today in leafy residential areas, parkways,
and neighborhood parks. 'I
a+.nlM
The Village at St. Anthony rec-
ognizes this village character
by establishing a main street
■ commercial area, complete with
ornamental lighting and edes-
trian friendly streets and side- r: +
walks; and by including high
quality residential buildings
flanked by trees and placed ad-
jacent to narrow streets.
■ August, 2003 5
■
■
