HOW TO USE THE NATURAL LAWN ORDINANCE
If after weighing all the pros and cons of naturalized
landscapes, you would like to establish one, your next step
is to obtain a permit from the City. This will allow you to
have grass plants more than 8" in height. Remember the
ordinance regulates the height of grass only. If you do not
propose to include tall grasses in your planting you do not
have to apply for a "natural lawn" permit. Even though you
do not need a permit, it would be advisable to discuss your
plans with neighbors so they understand the qualities of the
plants you anticipate using-..
However, other sections of the city code deal with landscape
plantings. These should be consulted with particular refer-
ence to your site. These include ordinances on parking lot
screening and visibility at driveways and street corners.
Call 266-4551 for further information.
TEXT OF THE ORDINANCE
Subdivision (f) of Subsection ( 2) of Section 27. 05 (Safe and
Sanitary Maintenance of Property) of the Madison General
Ordinances contains the following requirements for those
planning to become involved in a "natural lawn" project;
Landscaping, plantings and other decorative surface
treatments, including common species of grass, shall be
installed if necessary and maintained to present an
attractive appearance in all court and yard areas.
Except with prior application to and approval of a land
management plan from the Building Inspection Division
of the City of Madison lawns shall be maintained to a
height not to exceed eight ( 8) inches in length.
Plantings shall be maintained so as not to present
hazards to adjoining properties or to persons or vehi-
cles traveling on public ways and shall be maintained
so as to enhance the appearance' and value of the pro-
perty on which located and thereby the appearance and
value of the neighborhood and City.
1 . Application for Natural Lawn. Any owner or opera-
for of land in the City of Madison may apply for
approval of a land management plan for a natural
lawn, one where the grasses exceed eight (8)
inches in height, with the Building Inspection
Division.
a
10
